“Youth and Violent Extremism – Research Results in BiH” was presented for the first time in Sarajevo on Friday (Sep 20, 2019) at the Networks Business Center. The research was presented by Prof. Srđan Dušanić, PhD in Social Psychology and Researcher.

In order to get to know young people’s preferences for socially extreme attitudes and behaviors, a total of 1,058 young people was surveyed, of which 583 young men (55.1%) and 475 young women (44.9%). The average age of the respondents was 19.5, and the survey covered all regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The research was organized by Perpetuum mobile – Institute for Youth and Community Development in cooperation with local partners Association XY from Sarajevo and Youth Power from Mostar.

A lot of interesting and alarming data emerged from the results of the research, among which are the following:

  • About 41% believe that society is based on wrong values, and over 54% believe that it is on the verge of disaster and will collapse if something is not done.
  • About 45% of young respondents believe that radical action is necessary for society to “cleanse itself of evil.” 15% of respondents say that they respect those who have committed a murderous act for their ideals.

The activity was implemented under the YMI – Young Men Initiative project: “Promoting Healthier Lifestyles among Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina by Challenging Gender Stereotypes II” and the project: “Men and Boys as Partners in Promoting Gender Equality and Addressing Extremism and Youth Violence in the Western Balkans”, supported by the Government of Switzerland, the OAK Foundation, the Austrian Development Agency and CARE International Bosnia and Herzegovina.
