Halloween has passed and it is time to take off the masks. Status: M has taken care that 7 th and 8th November are reserved for taking of the masks and showing the true face of a real man, so we have prepared a series of activities and interesting events.

We organize two major events DeKarneval and Professional Conference Masks and Masculinities. Professional Conference Masks and Masculinities – Working with young men on non-violence, gender equality and health, which Status: M has organized together with the Education and Teacher Training Agency on 8th of November in the building of Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.

The goal that we have set ourselves in organizing the conference is to emphasize the importance of working with the young men on the deconstruction of negative models of masculinities that lead to the fact that they are not involved into the society, using violence, do not respect girls and women and they do not care about health.

We have prepared a few surprises, and we shall:

  • Present a model of working with young men on gender, health and non-violence in schools and communities;
  • Show preliminary results of research on the effectiveness of prevention programs in schools;
  • Demonstrate successful models of collaboration with schools, communities and the police in the implementation of a prevention program for young men;
  • Suggest ways for stakeholder involvementand capacity building for young professionals;
  • Present a model of working with parents to empower change in the attitudes and behavior of young men;
  • Assign a number of materials to work with young men for young professionals;

The conference will be opened by the representatives from Status: M and Viơnja Ljubičić Gender Equality ombudsman, Petar Skansi Deputy Minister of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, Davor Bernardić President of the Zagreb City Assembly and Erik Frimannslund Brede Deputy Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway, which is a great support to us.

With many of the guests of honor at the conference we are proud to point out that among the speakers will be Gary Barker from Promundo organization, co-author of the methodology M Program and co-founder of a global network MenEngage, John Crownover of organization Care International and also the program advisor of Young Men Initiative: promotion of equal gender norms , healthy lifestyles, and violent behavior among young people and representatives of various ministries and schools that are involved in our program.

The day before on 7th of November we will also organize a big event DeKarneval starting at 17 pm in Cinema SC Student Center in Zagreb. This is a great event for young people of all ages that aims to promote true models of masculinities that does not involve violence, inequality and unhealthy lifestyles! So take off the mask, and underneath them are the real men. We expect 800 high school students who will participate in a rich program that we prepared for them. There will be a lot of fun, learning and positive activist spirit.The program consists of photo exhibitions, free workshops capoeira, street artists (acrobats and graffiti artists), film screenings and premiere of the drama group IM – I am … which is realized by collaboration of Be a man Club (StatusM) and Umjetnička organizacija Točka na I. The first main event is the presentation of the film Be a man ckub, a young man movement to promote positive attitudes. The whole event will be hosted by Iva Ć ulentić and visited by members’ from Elemental, Vatra and actor Janko Popović Volarić.

Masks and Masculinities are supported by the organization Care International, Ministry of foreign affairs Kingdom of Norway and the City of Zagreb. Special thanks to the Student Centre in Zagreb and Digitel group who have provided support in logistics and space.

You must be wondering why DeKarneval Masks and Masculinities? Here’s the answer!

Masks are frequently associated with carnivals. We rarely look at the masks as something ordinary, something you can wear from day to day. But masks are more present than it seems. Boys wear a mask every day before starting school, meeting with the team, meeting with sympathy, performances before a crowd … It is a social mask they put because they believe it takes to be real men. DeKarneval is promoting an approach to young men that encourages them to be strong enough, capable and creative to be proud of their own gender-appropriate version of masculinity.

We look forward to seeing you and having fun with you.
