The conference Young Men as Allies in Ending Violence: Activism for Transforming Masculinities will be held on Jahorina mountain from 13th to 15th of November 2013 at the Hotel Termag and organised by CARE International NW Balkans and partner organisations.
The conference is organized within the project “Young Men Initiative for the prevention of gender-based violence in the North-West Balkans” that CARE International has conducted for the seventh consecutive year in collaboration with nine international and local partner organizations. The project is focused on changing the attitudes and behaviors of young men about gender-based and peer violence, and is currently being implemented in more than 30 cities in the region, including Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Zagreb, Mostar, Belgrade, Kosovska Mitrovica and Pristina, and with the support of relevant ministries, high schools, young men, girls, parents and the wider community.
In the previous period significant success has been achieved in working with young people and an innovative model of work was developed, which will be presented at the conference. Since the beginning of this year, more than 1,000 educational workshops were organized which were attended by over 5 and a half thousands of young people. Within the “Be a man” campaign more than 700 activities were organized in more than 30 cities in the region, and more than 14,000 young men and girls directly participated in the campaign activities. 7 summer camps were organized where young men and girls were taught skills of non-violent communication, leadership, healthy lifestyles and gender equality.
Aiming to jointly combat violence whose increase was registered among young people throughout the region this conference intends to bring together representatives of relevant institutions and organizations and to initiate discussion on the measures and policies for the active participation of young men and women in combating all forms of violence and promoting healthy lifestyles.
The project “Young Men Initiative for the prevention of gender-based violence in the North-West Balkans” is implemented in cooperation with local youth partner organizations: Center E8 (Belgrade), Perpetuum Mobile (Banja Luka), Association XY (Sarajevo), Altruist (Mostar), Status M (Zagreb), Synergy (Kosovska Mitrovica), and Peer Educators Network (Pristina). The project partners are also Smart Kolektiv (Belgrade), Instituto Promundo (Brazil) and ICRW (USA).
